Although we may infer this is an African Hornbill, this type of sculpture is more symbolic than representational in Senufo cultures. The Sejen is a symbol of fertility and procreation, a nod to their Founder. Hornbills are woven into the story being noble birds that mate for life and share responsibilities and protection of their young. Sculptures like this one are part of ceremonial practices of the Poro (lô), an initiation process for their community. These sculptures represent creation, ancestry, the known world, and how to function in it. During initiation, sculptures like this one would be carried or smaller ones would be worn atop the head while the young men were isolated to learn the skills, obligations, and lessons important in becoming respected adults. Agriculture, art, and ancestry are important to Senufo people.
