A stylish guardian for your home inspired by a unique history: This Steuben Clear Crystal Hippopotamus Figurine is what’s called a “hand cooler”. Hand coolers were used in a time before central air, when in ballrooms filled with energetic dancing and socializing, a woman would want to avoid the embarrassment of clammy, sweaty hands. Holding the cold stone would help equalize the hand temperature while also being a status accessory. Though this is a contemporary piece, it can still be used the same way it would’ve been used historically. A charming addition to any windowsill or shelf that glimmers in light!
Collector's Notes:
Steuben Clear Crystal Miniature House Hippo Hand Cooler Figurine Sculpture; by Lloyd Atkins for Steuben Glassworks circa 1998 Signed on base.
From Steuben's description of their hand cooler line. "Vision and wisdom are the qualities traditionally associated with the owl, a symbol to celebrate outstanding achievement. In the 18th and 19th centuries, young ladies attending dances employed porcelain, marble, and glass eggs to cool hands, heated by the excitement of the evening. Our line of crystal hand coolers modernized the design into exquisitely intricate works of art that nestle refreshingly in your palm."
