A classic motif through the eyes of the exceptional multi-disciplined Cleveland School Artist and long-time University Circle resident, Thelma Frazier Winter (1903–1977). This Madonna and Child sculpture showcases her mastery of clay and glazing! Even from a distance, we recognize the iconic form. Looking closely, we see very few details only intentional shapes and curves. The glaze application enhances the dimensionality of these features and lines. After starting a job at Cowan pottery, she fell in love with the endless possibilities of clay, enamels, and glazing. Throughout her lifetime, she experimented with many different artistic styles including modernism, cubism, and folk-inspired motifs.

Condition: As-Is; Good
Was broken and restored prior to our acquisition and priced accordingly. Loss to glazing in some areas including halo and bubbles in robe area. One area on back left arm appears as a loss in the photographs, but is actually some type of tape or sticker residue.
