Antique 1887 Frances Cleveland's Great Drawing Card Framed Lithograph; This lithograph features Frances Cleveland, the wife of President Grover Cleveland, portrayed as a 'Queen of Hearts' playing card. The artwork appeared on the cover of Judge magazine on October 22, 1887. The title refers to Frances Cleveland's popularity and her role as a 'drawing card' during her husband's southern tour.
Frances (Folsom) Cleveland, also known as Frankie, graduated from Wells College where she had studied political science, photography, and debating. She had several marriage proposals, accepting two and later ending the engagements deciding a friendship was preferred, before accepting Cleveland's. Cleveland was actually already President (1886) when the two were married, the first marriage to take place in the White House. She brought a social component to Cleveland's presidency, as he wished to be more private and quiet, she held many events. She advocated for education and helped teach, build schools, and create programs.
