Wolstenholme was a prominent English painter specializing in sporting and
animal subjects. During the 18th and 19th centuries, there was a strong demand for sporting art in Britain fueled by the popularity of hunting and equestrian activities. Dean Wolstenholme played a key role in developing this genre. The Essex Hunt was a renowned and fashionable hunt in Essex, England, established in the late 18th century. His original Essex Hunt paintings were often reproduced as prints, using
techniques like aquatint or engravings, and were often hand-colored to enhance
their appeal.
Wolstenholme exhibited in the Royal Academy between 1803-1824 and became well known for his hunting scenes, capturing the dynamism and detail of his subjects.
