This Civil War-era document dates September 10, 1864 and recognizes the honorable service in the U.S. Volunteers for 100 days of service in the Ohio National Guard. The "Hundred Days Men" were regiments of United States Volunteers raised for 100-day service during the American Civil War to free up veteran troops for combat. These short-term, lightly trained soldiers, who were a response to an idea from Ohio Governor John Brough and approved by President Lincoln, were intended for rear duties such as garrison, guarding supplies, and prisoners.
