Robert Sargent Austin, English (1895-1973)
Born in Leicester, England, Austin studied at the local art school before taking up a place at the Royal College of Art where he later took Professorship of the Graphic Department. Leading the revival of interest in engraving in Britain during the inter-war years, Austin found inspiration in the everyday – domestic scenes, landscapes, animals and still lifes. His prints created in the 1920s and 1930s were admired for their simplicity and clean lines, as well as his attention to light, texture, and perspective in his etchings and engravings.
