Sohner was known for his portraits in the Midwest. He received art training in St. Paul, Minnesota, and studied in Europe in 1933. Sohner was successful in receiving commissions for his portraits and won ribbons at the Minnesota State Fair.

Marianne was originally born in Austria in 1858 but moved to Minnesota where she had this portrait painted, met her husband, had three children, and passed away in 1931.
