Thomas Gainsborough, English (1727-1788)
Thomas Gainsborough was born in Sudbury, Suffolk to a family of wool manufacturers. He trained in London, and later moved to Bath where he did many portraits of his clients. He was primarily a portrait and landscape painter with Reynolds (his main rival), the leading portrait painter in England in the late 18th century. His style features feathery brushwork and rich sense of color. He was a founding member of the Royal Academy and became a favorite painter of George III.
Georgina Cavendish Duchess of Devonshire (1757-1806) was the leader of the Whig society and a prominent figure in the late 18th-century British society, known for her beauty, political influence, and complex personal life. She married the 5th Duke of Devonshire at the age of seventeen and became a celebrated socialite, fashion icon, and writer. Her life was marked by both public acclaim and personal struggles, including a tumultuous marriage, gambling debts.
