Sultry and elegant at the same time is Esquire's 1942 January Calendar Girl! Illustrated by Alberto Varga, renowned pin-up painter, this print features a blonde woman with rosy cheeks, red lips, and long nails holding a cigarette. A poem floats at the bottom left and is meant to be read as if she were reciting it (we like to imagine in a Lauren Bacall type voice). Hang this anywhere you wish to feel a touch of vintage glamour!
Collector's Notes:
Alberto Vargas, Peruvian-American painter (1896-1982)
Vargas was a Peruvian-American painter renowned for his pin-up girl illustrations. The "Varga Girls" became iconic images of American popular culture, particularly during WWII. Vargas is considered one of the most famous pin-up artists and a pioneer of airbrush art. His work has been featured in publications like Esquire and Playboy.
This framed Vargas print shows Esquire's 1942 January Calendar Girl. It has a red frame, a double layered mat with cream then red to compliment the red nails and lips of the featured lady.
A poem at the bottom left reads:
"January
I'll start the New Year with a pose
Enticing and provoking,
For January may be cold -
But, boy, oh boy, I'm smoking!"
