Vintage Margaret Lou Roybal Gutierrez Handmade Mini Pueblo Black Pottery Vase; Ildefonso NM; 1970s.
Margaret Lou Roybal Gutierrez was a daughter of noted potters Tonita and Juan Roybal. When she was ten, her mother died. In 1957, she married and moved to the Santa Clara pueblo. When she was in her 30s, she started studying ceramics from her father and her brother, JD Roybal.
This technique of matte black design on a lustrous surface was perfected over centuries by practicing Puebloan artisans. Maria Martinez cultivated this style with her husband Julian after uncovering 12th century blackware ceramic vessels in an Ancestral Pueblo dig site. They recorded the designs of the pieces unearthed and began reincorporating this artistic ancestry into their own work.
